Fatal shots fired during official inspection in Upper Palatinate
A person was shot dead during a routine weapons inspection on Thursday in Berngau in the Upper Palatinate. According to Kleine Zeitung, the male victim was recovered in front of a residential building where the suspect subsequently barricaded himself. A further person was seriously injured.
Two employees of the district authority (Landratsamt) Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate had arrived at the man's property to conduct an official weapons inspection. Shots were fired during this process. According to Regensburg police, it initially remained unclear whether the suspect himself was to be inspected and whether the victims were the authority employees.
Specialist units surrounded the residential building into which the shooter had withdrawn in the afternoon. The operation had already lasted several hours by early evening. A police helicopter was deployed for reconnaissance. Extensive cordons were established after numerous reports of gunshot-like sounds from the municipality came in around 2:00 p.m. The public was urged not to leave their houses.
