The man who shot six staff members at a women's and children's shelter in Stade, Lower Saxony, on Monday is suspected of having abused his own infant in April. This is reported by the newspapers Der Spiegel and Die Welt based on their own research, as Le Quotidien reports.
The girl, who was three months old at the time, received medical treatment after the suspected shaking trauma. The two publications are not relying on named sources for this information.
The 45-year-old, a Turkish national born in Germany from the Hanover region, had come to the scene to discuss custody of his daughter. The small child was in the premises together with the mother.
At a press conference, investigators had already announced that the suspect was known to police. He had come to the attention of the police for making threats, but was not considered violent.
According to research by the two newspapers, the man is said to have intimidated the medical staff at the clinic where the baby was treated. He is said to have threatened the doctors with consequences if anything happened to his child.
The Hanover public prosecutor's office confirmed to Die Welt that proceedings over these threats had been discontinued. The remarks made had not constituted a criminal offence.
A statement from police on these new findings was not available at the time of going to press.
The suspect was apprehended on Monday in a vehicle driven by a 65-year-old woman. According to investigators, this person maintains a close family relationship with the gunman.
Lüneburg police announced that a special task force is being set up to investigate the crime. Officers are currently evaluating video footage and reviewing information submitted by citizens via an internet platform that has been established.
On Tuesday evening, a memorial service for the victims took place in a Stade church.
