Investigators arrested a man who claimed to be an officer and attempted to collect valuables from an elderly woman.

In Waldshut in southern Baden, a suspect accused of fraud fell into a trap when he allegedly acted on behalf of the police. Criminal investigators were able to arrest him during the planned handover, as reported by the Basler Zeitung with reference to the local Waldshut-Tiengen police station.
Previously, on Tuesday, there had been a flood of telephone calls across the entire city area in which criminals posed as law enforcement officers. The officers at the station registered a total of 18 such reports.
The following morning, an 89-year-old woman from a neighbourhood contacted the authorities. She reported that an unknown man had announced himself in order to collect precious metals from her. He had identified himself as a police officer.
The officers positioned themselves and intervened when the suspected perpetrator appeared for the agreed handover. During a subsequent search of his car, they found stolen goods from another fraudulent case that had already been successfully completed. Through timely intervention, they prevented five-figure euro damage.
The following day, the arrested man was brought before a judge. He is now in remand custody.
