Six adults were killed in a firearms attack at a youth welfare centre in the north German city of Stade on Monday. According to police, they were all staff members of the facility.
Initial investigation results suggest that the motive for the attack was likely a custody dispute, investigators said.
The suspected attacker, a 45-year-old German citizen of Turkish descent, was arrested during his flight the same afternoon, police confirmed.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the victims and their families via the social media platform X. "The news from Stade is deeply shocking," Merz wrote, adding that many people "who wanted to help or protect others" were killed or injured. He thanked the police for their swift response.
Lower Saxony's interior minister, Daniela Behrens, described the shooting at a press conference as "cold-blooded".
Stade is a city with around 50,000 residents, located west of Hamburg.
