The 45-year-old had travelled to the crime scene with a companion from Bremen to take part in a discussion about the assistance plan for his child. The woman waited in the vehicle while the man entered the building. There he drew a firearm and killed six people.
Before the attack, a court in Neustadt am Rübenberge had decided at the end of May to strip the father of custody. The baby had been taken to a clinic a few weeks earlier with suspected shaken baby syndrome. Doctors had classified the father as threatening and informed the authorities.
Investigations by a tabloid newspaper revealed that the perpetrator was wanted in Turkey for a serious sexual crime and on suspicion of abusing his daughter from an earlier relationship. He is said to have escaped from Turkish custody and later entered Germany.
The companion, who works as a consultant for migrants, had sent a letter to the media shortly before the attack. In it, she claimed that the accusations against the man were fabricated. She stated that she had known nothing of the perpetrator's intentions. After the shooting, he allegedly forced her at gunpoint to flee with him. The journey ended when officers stopped the car.
