According to zeit.de, a man wanted for eight years was arrested on Sunday morning during a police check near Weil am Rhein in the Lörrach district. The 37-year-old Austrian initially attempted to flee but was apprehended shortly afterwards by federal police officers.
The district court had sentenced the man ten years ago to a three-year prison sentence for drug trafficking. After serving part of the sentence, he was deported to Austria in 2018 and placed on a wanted list. The federal police explained that this was a standard procedure: those deported were explicitly informed that if they re-entered Germany, the remaining sentence would be enforced.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, the 37-year-old attempted to enter Germany via the motorway, according to federal police. Before reaching the checkpoint, he exited the vehicle and fled on foot – without success. Officers apprehended him shortly afterwards. He was subsequently taken to a correctional facility, where he must now serve the outstanding portion of his prison sentence.
