Explosives found at transformer station in Brandenburg – power plant affected
German police have discovered explosive devices at a transformer station in Turnow-Preilack in Brandenburg. At least one detonation has been recorded, and bomb disposal experts are at the scene.
Explosive devices at German transformer station
German police have found what they describe as "unconventional explosive and incendiary devices" at a transformer station in Turnow-Preilack in the state of Brandenburg, according to DR Nyheder citing several German media outlets, including Tagesschau.
At eight o'clock in the morning, damage to at least one cable was established. Bomb disposal experts have been called to the scene, but police state there is no danger to the public. Not all devices have detonated, but at least one detonation has taken place.
– The traces are being secured, according to a police spokesperson.
The transformer station distributes electricity produced by the coal-fired power plant in Jänschwalde, which is Brandenburg's largest coal power plant. Leag, the electricity producer that operates the station and is Germany's second-largest electricity producer with headquarters in Brandenburg, describes the incident as an "attack" according to German media outlet Spiegel.
As a result of the incident, a technical breakdown occurred in one of the power plant's units, which technicians continue to work on repairing. There are no reports of power outages resulting from the breakdown.
Police state that they are taking the incident "very seriously", whilst the precise extent remains unclear.
Previous sabotage in Berlin
In January, a far-left-wing group claimed responsibility for a power outage in the western part of Berlin, which left just over 45,000 households as well as 2,000 businesses, care homes and hospitals without power for several days.
The group, which calls itself "Vulkangruppen", said at the time that the aim was to restrict fossil fuel energy supply, and that the extent of the outage had not been intentional.
