Double murder during weapons inspection in Upper Palatinate – end to siege

According to In.gr, a police operation in Berngau, in the Neumarkt area of Upper Palatinate, concluded with the arrest of a 60-year-old German national who is alleged to have shot two people during a routine weapons inspection.

The operation began on Thursday afternoon after the suspect opened fire on employees of the Neumarkt district administration office who approached him to conduct the inspection. During the altercation that followed, both employees sustained fatal injuries. Police confirmed to Bavarian Broadcasting (BR) late on Thursday evening the death of the second victim — a female colleague who collapsed immediately after the initial shots. Her death was announced in the early hours of Friday. The two bodies were recovered, and the victims' families were notified.

The perpetrator barricaded himself in a building in the area. Specialist units were deployed and surrounded the building, and negotiations with him commenced. "We are in contact with him and the contact is two-way. We are always trying to find a peaceful solution, which is essentially achieved through communication. Everyone knows the alternative. But the goal is certainly to find a non-violent solution," a police spokesperson stated earlier in the evening.

At 02:20 a.m. on 9 October 2026, a surprise operation was carried out. "During this operation, the suspect was neutralised and arrested," the Upper Palatinate police statement said. The conclusion of the operation was announced officially at 04:22. Police noted that "at present, no information can be provided regarding the motive for the crime," whilst no further details about the victims' identities have been released.
