The incident took place after midday in a residential area of the town, specifically on Dankerstrasse. The Lüneburg Police Directorate stated in a statement that five victims died at the scene and a sixth died later in hospital from their injuries. The centre where the shooting took place serves pregnant women, mothers with small children and children under six years of age, and is located close to a nursery and a primary school. The authorities initially urged the population to leave or avoid the area for security reasons, as part of what they described as a "major police operation".
Police warned that among the injured there are several in serious condition, so it was not ruled out that the death toll could rise. Regional media NDR and NTV had previously reported information about the number of victims and the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
Carsten Brokelmann, local councillor, expressed relief at the safety of staff and children at the nearby educational centres. "I want to thank the police for their work in this confusing situation," he stated, also conveying the condolences of the municipal administration. Stade is a town of slightly fewer than 50,000 inhabitants situated approximately 40 kilometres west of Hamburg.
