Google News DK — Crime (da) reports that German police confirmed on Wednesday that an attack on a transformer station in the eastern state of Brandenburg is being investigated as terrorism.
On Tuesday morning, multiple explosive devices were deployed against power lines at the Preilack power station near the Jänschwalde coal-fired power station in Germany, approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Berlin. At least one of the devices detonated, but the others did not go off, an anonymous police source told AFP on Tuesday.
No one was injured, and the explosions did not result in a major power outage.
German police are also investigating another similar incident from Tuesday evening as sabotage. It took place at a transformer station in Bergheim near Cologne in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Police established that there was damage to power lines, but no power cuts have been reported.
Attacks on German energy infrastructure are not a new phenomenon. In January, high-voltage power lines were ignited near a power plant outside Berlin — the left-wing extremist group Volcano Group claimed responsibility at the time.
Germany is generally on high alert regarding possible attacks on critical infrastructure. German authorities have previously accused Russia of involvement in an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport in early August.
