Missing children reappear in Seelow after five years
A mother who fled with her children in 2021 reported to police in Seelow on Friday. Alfons and Frieda are well.
Siblings found safe after nearly five years missing
Two siblings who had been missing since August 2021 have reappeared. According to 20 Minuten, their mother appeared at Seelow police station on Friday – approximately 70 kilometres east of Berlin.
Brandenburg police had made the case public again shortly beforehand. According to the authorities, K. S. is said to have removed her children Alfons and Frieda from their family environment at that time without legal grounds. A farewell letter left behind suggested that COVID-19 measures were the deciding factor: the mother felt quarantine requirements restricted her personal freedom.
At the time of their disappearance, the siblings were seven and eight years old. Subsequent account movements from March 2023 led investigators to Chemnitz, approximately 300 kilometres south of Seelow. Evidence also suggested that the family may have stayed on a farm in Buggenhagen, around 200 kilometres north of Seelow, in spring 2023. Most recently, authorities suspected the family was in the Frankfurt (Oder) area.
Throughout this entire period, Frieda and Alfons are said not to have attended school. Medical examinations have not been documented since 2021, and from 2023 onwards there is said to have been no health insurance coverage.
According to a police spokesperson, the children are well. The authorities were able to definitively establish the identity of the siblings, who are now five years older.
