Two dead after violent attack at school in Gosen-Neu Zittau – 19-year-old arrested

Two people have been killed at a school in Gosen-Neu Zittau in Brandenburg on the outskirts of Berlin. According to n-tv, a suspect was arrested at the scene; police and rescue services were engaged in a major operation.
According to reports from the "Märkische Allgemeine", the victims were an 18-year-old schoolgirl and a 30-year-old man. The man is said to have been killed as he attempted to stop the attacker. The arrested suspect is, according to investigators, a 19-year-old German. Police have so far made no official statements regarding the victims or the exact course of events.
Based on current findings, police are treating it as a crime of passion. The alleged perpetrator is said to have been the ex-boyfriend of the murdered schoolgirl.
The crime scene is a privately run school campus on the edge of Gosen-Neu Zittau, surrounded by forest and lakes. The premises include a gymnasium, an upper secondary school and a technical secondary school. The town in the Oder-Spree district has approximately 3,500 inhabitants.
Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke expressed his shock. "In a terrible attack, two people have been killed. This deed shocks our entire state," said the SPD politician and expressed his deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims.
"Our schools should be a haven for our young people. Here a school has become the scene of an appalling act of violence," Woidke added. The investigators were working "with all available resources to clarify the background to this deed comprehensively and as quickly as possible".
