Explosive devices at power lines in Lusatia: authorities investigating sabotage

In eastern Saxony, police have secured twelve explosive devices at high-voltage power transmission lines. According to spiegel.de, the home-made explosive devices were intended to cause damage to the power lines through a short circuit. Specialists from the State Criminal Investigation Office have defused the devices. There was no damage to the electricity supply or endangerment to the public.

Investigators found the devices in the area of high-voltage power transmission lines south of the Bärwalde transformer substation near Lippen as well as east of the Graustein transformer substation near Schleife. Both locations are in the Lusatian lignite mining region, close to the border with Brandenburg. The investigation concerns a suspected causing of an explosive detonation in combination with attempted disruption of public utilities and attempted anti-constitutional sabotage.

The major operation began on Friday. According to the authorities, it was triggered by cross-agency information and the report of an alert citizen. Police and the State Prosecutor's Office Dresden are currently examining a possible connection with comparable incidents in Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia. The Saxony prosecutors and security authorities said they were in close coordination with the affected states.

The search of the electrical infrastructure is being continued as a precaution. The investigators are also appealing to the public for assistance: persons or vehicles that have been noticed in the area of high-voltage power transmission lines should be reported. Photographic and video material is of particular interest. "Such recordings can provide important findings and substantially support investigative work," the authorities stated.

In the remaining cases, police are searching with a wanted poster for the suspected power saboteur Daniel V. The 48-year-old is registered in Gevelsberg and is currently at large. He brought himself into the investigators' focus through a confession letter.
