21 thefts of meat and alcohol: Two men sentenced to imprisonment

Two men aged 31 and 47 were on Friday convicted of a series of shop thefts committed primarily in the north-western part of Zealand, according to a statement from Mid- and West Zealand Police, as reported by B.T.

The two defendants committed four of the thefts together, whilst the 31-year-old also committed 17 additional thefts alone. According to the prosecution, the goods, which were primarily meat and alcohol, were stolen with a view to resale.

"This is a case where the two men repeatedly stole expensive goods from shops, primarily in order to sell them on," said prosecutor Cathrine Rasmussen from the prosecution authority for Mid- and West Zealand in the statement.

She added that both men have previously been convicted of shop theft, which contributed to the court imposing longer prison sentences.

The 31-year-old was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment as an additional sentence on top of a series of previous convictions. The court placed particular emphasis on the fact that he continued the thefts shortly after a previous sentence for similar criminality, and that the offences bore the hallmark of a "systematic nature".

The 47-year-old received an additional sentence of four months' imprisonment and a fine of 9,000 kroner. The court also found him guilty of several traffic offences: it was the fifth time he had been caught driving without a licence, and the sixth time he had been caught for drink-driving.
