The man diverted the route towards a wooded area of the province. There, according to authorities, he beat, raped and stabbed both teenagers. Nelly's friend managed to escape; Nelly was left at the mercy of the attacker and lost her life.

The suspect identified as Edwin Rodríguez, aged 30, voluntarily turned himself in to police and confessed to the crimes. Relatives of the victim indicated, furthermore, that Rodríguez had previously served a sentence for rape offences, and that he had been released before this new attack.

The sole survivor of the incident was recovering in a hospital at the time of the report. Nelly Álvarez's family is demanding that the attacker receive the maximum sentence provided for by law.
