A National Police corporal shot and wounded a man on Tuesday on Avenida Coronel Rafael Fernández Domínguez, near the Italia residential area in Santo Domingo Este, according to eldia.com.do. The incident was triggered by a traffic accident.

The officer was identified as Andrés Miguel Montero Montero, who was not on duty at the time of the incident.

According to a preliminary report from the National Police, after the accident, Joel Ferreras Amador, 34, along with several people travelling on motorcycles, allegedly began pursuing the corporal.

According to the authorities' account, Montero Montero took refuge in the mobile police station in the Italia area, where some of the pursuers allegedly arrived. In that context, the individuals allegedly attempted to disarm the officer using a bladed weapon.

In response to that situation, the corporal fired several shots, one of which struck Ferreras Amador. The man was transported to Dr. Darío Contreras Trauma Hospital, where he received medical attention.

The National Police reported that it placed Corporal Andrés Miguel Montero Montero at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office. The institution's internal oversight bodies are investigating the circumstances of the incident, including what occurred after the traffic accident and the conditions under which the shots were fired, in order to determine corresponding responsibilities.

The institution reiterated its commitment to due process and transparency in the investigation.
