A sergeant of the National Police shot and wounded a civilian on Tuesday on Coronel Rafael Fernández Domínguez Avenue, near the Italia residential development in Santo Domingo Este, according to a report by hoy.com.do.

The officer involved was identified as Andrés Miguel Montero Montero. The victim is Joel Ferreras Amador, 34 years old, who was taken to the Dr. Darío Contreras Trauma Hospital to receive medical attention.

According to the preliminary report from the National Police, the incident originated in a traffic accident in which Montero Montero was involved whilst off duty. Following the collision, Ferreras Amador and several people on motorcycles allegedly pursued the officer.

"According to the information gathered, the sergeant entered the mobile headquarters of the Italia residential development, where allegedly several of the people chasing him attempted to rob him of his service weapon using a bladed weapon," the institution stated in its communiqué.

Faced with that situation, according to the preliminary account, the officer fired several shots, resulting in Ferreras Amador being wounded.

The National Police stated that Montero Montero was referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office. The police internal control bodies continue to deepen their investigations to establish with accuracy the circumstances of the incident and to determine the corresponding responsibilities.

The institution reiterated its commitment to due process, transparency and objective investigation, in accordance with current legal provisions.
