Judge raises charges against Espaillat brothers over Jet Set collapse

Judge Franny González Castillo, of the Fourth Criminal Court of the National District, modified the legal charges in the Jet Set case: brothers Antonio and Maribel Espaillat will be tried for homicide with eventual intent, rather than involuntary homicide, according to listindiario.com.

The change resulted from a request by the prosecution that had been rejected in the preliminary phase by judge Raymundo Mejía.

"It could have been prevented, there was warning and this should not have happened. I have not seen an accusation as perfect as that in this case," González Castillo declared when announcing his ruling. The court based the new charges on the same facts already established in the accusation.

The collapse of the roof of the nightclub Jet Set occurred on 8 April 2025, during a party featuring merengue musician Rubby Pérez. The tragedy left 236 dead and more than 18 injured; Pérez is among the fatalities.
