Court sentences man to 20 years for knife killing in La Victoria

The Second Collegiate Tribunal of the Judicial District of Santo Domingo Este imposed a sentence of 20 years in prison on Manuel Miguel Prenza Santana, found guilty of the murder of Michael Smith Durán Moreno, according to a report by elnuevodiario.com.do.

The crime occurred in the early morning hours of 20 April 2025 on 3rd Street in the La Victoria sector, Santo Domingo Norte. According to the accusation by the Public Ministry, Prenza Santana arrived at the scene carrying a knife and attacked Durán Moreno with multiple stab wounds in different parts of his body, causing his death without any prior words being exchanged.

The case file, processed by investigating prosecutor Jerry Arias G., establishes that the motive for the murder was the jealousy the defendant felt towards the victim's romantic partner at the time.

During the trial, trial prosecutor Francisco Vinicio, representing the Public Ministry, presented the evidence that established the criminal responsibility of the accused.

The convicted man was found guilty of violating articles 295 and 304 of the Dominican Penal Code, as well as provisions of Law 631-16 on the Control and Regulation of Arms, Ammunition and Related Materials.

The sentence was handed down by judges Josefina Ubiera Guerrero, Ana Miledys Taveras and Isaías R. Martínez P., members of the collegiate tribunal.

Prenza Santana will serve his sentence at the Najayo Hombres Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre.
