Two men were killed in the early hours of Saturday, 12 September, during a shootout with agents from the Regional Investigation Sub-Directorate of the National Police (Dicrim) in the El Almirante sector, Santo Domingo Este, according to infobae.com.
The deceased were identified as Luis Rivera Simón, 30 years old, and Henrry Joel Borrell Rudecindo, 31. Both were taken to El Almirante Hospital with gunshot wounds, but died whilst receiving medical care.
The operation began after a Dicrim patrol received information about a possible robbery that the vehicle's occupants were planning to commit. According to police accounts, Rivera Simón and Borrell Rudecindo were travelling armed—carrying pistols and bulletproof vests—and when intercepted, they reacted by firing at the officers, which triggered an exchange of gunfire.
The vehicle they were travelling in was a ride-sharing application car. The driver, who emerged unscathed, told investigators that he had been hired by the two passengers to make a trip. According to his account, during the journey he noticed they were carrying two firearms and bulletproof vests, and he heard conversations that suggested a possible robbery. When a patrol ordered him to stop, he claimed that the passengers forced him to accelerate; minutes later he braked the car and jumped out of the vehicle.
Police did not specify how long the driver remained outside the vehicle or how the vehicle continued to move before the confrontation.
At the scene, investigators seized a Taurus G2C model pistol, 9 millimetre calibre, with serial number ABH808428, and another .45 calibre pistol whose serial number could not be identified, along with three shell casings of the same calibre. Scientific Police also collected two black bulletproof vests, mobile phones, balaclavas, wallets and clothing items, all held as evidence for investigation proceedings.
The authorities noted that both deceased individuals appeared in police records for offences related to controlled substances, theft, armed robbery and criminal association. No information was provided as to whether any police officers were injured during the shootout or whether other individuals might be linked to the alleged criminal plan.
