A large contingent of National Police officers was stationed at El Ingenio cemetery, west of Santiago, on Monday during the burial of Cristofer Almonte Díaz, alias "Niño", 19 years old, according to diariolibre.com. The young man died during an alleged exchange of gunfire with police officers.
The measure was ordered as a precaution against possible disturbances during the funeral. Almonte Díaz was one of the most wanted fugitives in Santiago and was indicated for his alleged involvement in the homicide of Amaury Saviñón, which occurred on 14 August last in the Baracoa sector.
Family questions the circumstances of death
Seneida Díaz, mother of the deceased, asserted that her son was detained alive and transported to a residence, where, according to her account, he was killed.
"If they caught him alive, they had to arrest him and not kill him," the woman stated.
Maritza Bernard Ramos, a neighbour of the family, considered that similar situations will continue to occur if education is not improved from the earliest years. She noted that those serving prison sentences face difficulties reintegrating into society because of their criminal records.
"Youth have to change, but they have to change while growing up," she stated, and called on current and future governments to strengthen education and create greater opportunities for young people.
Fourth killed in recent days
Almonte Díaz is one of four alleged offenders who have died in recent days in Santiago during alleged confrontations with National Police officers.
