José Ignacio Rodríguez, alias "Ignacio", aged 48, died on Friday night after being wounded during an alleged exchange of gunfire with agents of the Central Investigation Directorate (Dicrim) in the Pastor Bella Vista sector, Santiago province, according to diariolibre.com.
According to a preliminary report from the National Police, agents were executing an operation to locate Rodríguez when he, upon noticing the police presence, allegedly opened fire against the investigators. The agents repelled the aggression and wounded the man, who was taken to a healthcare facility where he subsequently died.
Rodríguez was listed in police records with eight prior convictions from various years and was wanted through judicial orders linked to vehicle theft cases. At the scene, a grey Toyota Corolla reported as stolen was seized, along with other personal effects.
The body was sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) for corresponding procedures.
The case is recorded in a context of increased deaths during police interventions in the country. Until 25 September, at least 187 people had died in actions by National Police agents during 2026, according to a survey of publicly reported cases.
