Raid in Santiago ends with one dead and SWAT officer shot
A man died and a corporal from the SWAT unit was injured by gunfire during a night-time operation in the Ensanche Espaillat sector of Santiago, according to infobae.com reporting based on information from the National Police of the Dominican Republic.
The deceased was identified as Isaac de Jesús Fernández Reyes, 21 years old, known as "Guccito". According to the preliminary version from the National Police, the young man opened fire on officers at the moment they were preparing to execute a judicial warrant for a search on Imbert Avenue, and the uniformed officers responded to the aggression.
The incident occurred around 10:48 p.m. Members of the Regional Criminal Investigation Subdirectorate (DICRIM) participated with tactical support from the SWAT group.
Corporal Rafael Gómez de la Cruz, a member of the SWAT unit, received a projectile in his left hand with an entry and exit wound, as well as an exposed fracture. He was immediately transferred to a medical centre to receive treatment; the authorities did not specify his health status nor whether he remains hospitalised.
Fernández Reyes died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. The body was collected in the presence of the competent authorities and sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) for the corresponding procedures. The authorities provided no details about the deceased's criminal history.
Personnel from the Scientific Police collected a 9-millimetre Glock pistol at the scene, a magazine with a capacity for 30 rounds, accessories, a mobile phone and several shell casings. Ballistic examinations will need to determine whether the weapon found was used during the confrontation and to reconstruct the exact sequence of the shots.
So far, it has not been reported whether there were other people inside the building nor whether any arrests related to the case were made. The investigation will continue under coordination of the judicial authorities and technical bodies that participated in the collection of evidence.
