Two Dominicans captured by Interpol face extradition to Italy over drug trafficking

A cross-border investigation concluded with the detention of a father and his son in San Pedro de Macorís, accused by the judicial authorities of Rome of illicit trafficking and possession of narcotic and psychotropic substances. According to infobae.com, the arrests were carried out by agents of the Interpol Area Directorate Santo Domingo and the Criminal Investigation Sub-directorate (Dicrim) of San Pedro de Macorís.

The detainees were identified as Kely Morban Álvarez and his son Kevin Morban Pérez, Dominican citizens who appeared on international red notices issued at the request of Rome. Both face extradition proceedings following resolutions handed down by the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, which ordered their capture for that purpose.

Kevin Morban Pérez was intercepted whilst travelling along Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó avenue, one of the main thoroughfares of San Pedro de Macorís. The authorities did not inform whether the detention was the result of prior surveillance or whether any assets, documents or other evidence were seized during the operation.

Kely Morban Álvarez was arrested later at the facilities of the Regional South-East Directorate of the National Police. Official information did not specify the circumstances under which he was found at that location or whether he attended voluntarily.

The international red notices in effect against both allow police agencies in different countries to locate and provisionally detain persons wanted by foreign judicial authorities. In this case, the requests came from Rome, where the authorities are investigating an alleged structure linked to the movement of narcotics in which the two Dominicans would have participated in the receipt and transport of illicit substances, coordinated with other individuals also under investigation.

To date, no details have been disclosed about the type or quantity of drugs related to the case, the routes used by the organisation or the dates on which the facts investigated by Italian justice occurred. Nor was it reported whether there are other Dominican citizens wanted in the same case.

Following the arrests, father and son were placed in the custody of Interpol Santo Domingo, the agency responsible for coordinating actions linked to international search and apprehension orders. They must be made available to the Public Ministry so that the steps envisioned in extradition proceedings can be carried out.

The decision on whether both will be handed over to the Italian authorities to answer the charges rests with Dominican justice, which will evaluate the documentation presented in each case file.
