Over 53,000 active arrest warrants in the Dominican Republic

The National Police recorded 53,877 outstanding arrest warrants against at least 50,000 fugitive individuals for various crimes, according to proceso.com.do. Of that total, 1,185 correspond to persons wanted for homicide, whilst sexual assault, cybercrime and robbery also feature among the offences with the highest number of active warrants.

The most notable case is that of José Luis Mateo Medina, who according to the institution's database has accumulated 41 records for homicide, robbery and theft, making him the individual with the highest number of active records.

The National Police spokesperson, Colonel Diego Pesqueira, also responded to criticism generated by recent confrontations between officers and alleged criminals. Pesqueira clarified that all persons killed in recent weeks had active arrest warrants, and stressed that shootouts do not constitute a state mandate, but rather a legal recourse that officers resort to only when confronted by criminals.

The institution made a public appeal to those with pending matters with the justice system to turn themselves in voluntarily. The authorities guaranteed that their fundamental rights would be respected, as occurred with the 107 fugitives who placed themselves at the disposal of justice during the month of September.
