Suspect in money remittance robbery in Azua surrenders to police with lawyers

Michael Manuel Urbaez, known as "Cachón", presented himself to the authorities of the Central Investigation Directorate (Dicrim) on 25 September accompanied by his lawyers and a communications representative, according to infobae.com. He was identified as one of the alleged members of the group that attempted to rob a Carbi Express branch in Sabana Yegua, Azua province, on 11 September.
"Michael is being sought and requested by the honourable National Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office to be investigated in connection with the attempted robbery," declared one of Urbaez's lawyers during the surrender. The legal representative clarified that his client appeared voluntarily with legal advice to place himself at the disposal of the justice system.
Reception and police protocol
Colonel Diego Pesqueira, spokesman for the National Police, received Urbaez along with the deputy director of Dicrim, Colonel Julio Emilio Gullón. Pesqueira guaranteed respect for the constitutional and individual rights of the detainee and compliance with due process.
In accordance with institutional protocol, Dicrim agents handcuffed Urbaez and arranged his transfer to the medical area, where an evaluation of his physical condition would be carried out before proceeding with investigation and judicial proceedings. The authorities clarified that criminal responsibility was not attributed to him in definitive form, and that the investigation seeks to establish the circumstances of the event and the level of individual participation of each person linked to the case.
Three dead and one detained in previous operations
Prior to Urbaez's surrender, the National Police had deployed joint operations with the Public Prosecutor's Office. Three alleged members of the group died during a confrontation with Dicrim agents; the authorities identified them as Danny Brayan Contreras, Starling Leonel Peñaló, alias "El Santiaguero", and Pedro Luis Paredes.
In addition, the police reported the arrest of Sandy Alberto Samboy Garó. During the interventions, one rifle, three pistols, ammunition, bullet-proof vests, balaclavas, mobile phones, 20 GPS-type devices and two vehicles were seized, materials that remained under expert analysis.

The case of "Cachón" is part of a series of voluntary presentations to Dominican police registered during 2026. In May, Francis Mishael Laureano Marte was presented by his lawyers to the police headquarters. The authorities were investigating him for his alleged connection with a structure dedicated to high-technology crimes, including the creation of fraudulent profiles and illicit transfers.
In all these cases, people detained following voluntary surrenders must be placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office, which determines the precautionary measures and corresponding charges within each proceeding.
