A court in Santo Domingo Oeste ordered three months of preventive detention for three brothers accused of killing a man with machetes and knife stabs on 20 September, according to ultimasnoticias.com.do.
The accused, identified as Delis Ángel Díaz Beltré, Esmerlin Díaz Beltré and Miguel Estarlin Díaz Beltré, are charged in the death of Carlos Antonio Matos in the El Abanico sector of Herrera. A forensic medical certificate from the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) determined that the victim sustained multiple wounds caused by sharp weapons.
Prosecutor Ramón de la Rosa, who is responsible for the investigation, indicated that the three brothers arrived armed with machetes and daggers at the store where Matos was sitting. The victim attempted to flee the location, but was caught by the accused, who continued attacking him until causing his death.
During the hearing, prosecuting attorney Joel Pinales reported that an uncle of Matos testified that the defendants acted in retaliation for a quarrel sustained two years ago between Miguel Estarlin Díaz Beltré and the victim.
The Public Ministry assigned the case a provisional legal classification for violation of articles 73, 74, 91 and 92, subsection 3, of the Dominican Penal Code, corresponding to association of wrongdoers and murder. The accused also face charges for violation of articles 83 and 86 of Law 631-16, dated 2 August 2016, on the Control and Regulation of Arms, Ammunition and Related Materials.
Judge Cecilia Toribio, of the Judicial Office of Permanent Care Services of Santo Domingo Oeste, ordered that the three brothers serve the coercive measure at the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre (CCR) Najayo Hombres, located in San Cristóbal province.
