Minor charged with double murder in Manabí after being found with gunshot wound

The General Public Prosecutor's Office filed charges against a 17-year-old adolescent for his alleged involvement in the murder of two people in Santa Ana canton, Manabí province, according to eluniverso.com.

The double homicide occurred in the Horacio Hidrovo sector, in front of a residential property. The two victims were shot and died at the scene. After receiving an alert from ECU911, National Police officers attended the scene and took initial statements from family members and neighbours.

With this information, authorities activated an operation to identify those allegedly responsible. Investigations led to a nearby medical centre, where the adolescent was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound. Officers verified that his physical characteristics matched the descriptions gathered in the witness statements. He was isolated and placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

During the hearing on flagrancy assessment and filing of charges, the Public Prosecutor's Office presented several items of evidence: the police report, statements from the arresting officers, and a technical scene inspection report. The latter document records the location of 23 spent cartridge cases at the crime scene.

Additional evidence includes two mobile phones, clothing items seized at the time of arrest, records of removal of bodies, and post-mortem protocols. The latter confirmed that both victims died from gunshot wounds. The prosecutor in the case also ordered further proceedings and the taking of additional statements to deepen the investigation.

After analysing the evidence presented, the judge granted the Public Prosecutor's Office's request and ordered the adolescent's preventive detention. He also set a period of 30 days for the fiscal investigation stage, during which further evidence on the case will be gathered.

Article 140 of the Comprehensive Organic Penal Code (COIP) establishes for the crime of murder a sentence of between 26 and 30 years of imprisonment in the case of adults. As the defendant is a minor, his legal situation is governed by the provisions of the Organic Code for Children and Adolescents.
