Police Officer Shot Dead While Playing Cards in Guayaquil Suburb
Jonathan Aguilar Mendez, a 38-year-old police corporal, was shot dead on the evening of Tuesday, 12 October in a suburb of Guayaquil. With his death, seven police officers have been killed so far this year.

Jonathan Aguilar Mendez, a 38-year-old police corporal, was shot dead on the evening of Tuesday, 12 October at the intersection of streets 28 and O'Connor in the suburb of Guayaquil, whilst playing cards with friends, according to vistazo.com.
The officer was on medical leave at the time of the attack. A vehicle without licence plates passed twice through the area with two male figures and a woman in the front passenger seat. The car was accompanied by a black motorcycle with two occupants.
According to the police report, one of the individuals got out of the vehicle, walked into the middle of the street and opened fire on Aguilar Mendez. The officer's relatives immediately took him to a public hospital, but he did not survive.
Wilson Torres, head of the Portete district, told Ecuavisa: "There were roughly eight shots and he has about 15 entry and exit wounds in different parts of his body". Preliminary investigations established eight gunshots.
Aguilar Mendez worked in the Guayas subzone, assigned to the National Unit for the Maintenance of Order (UNMO). The National Directorate for Crimes Against Life, Violent Deaths, Disappearances, Extortion and Kidnapping (Dinased) attended the scene to gather evidence and open a formal investigation.
With this murder, the number of police officers killed in Ecuador during the current year rises to seven, Ecuavisa reported.
