A heavy vehicle driver was apprehended by the National Police on the evening of Wednesday, 7 October, after physically assaulting an officer from the Transit and Mobility Authority (ATM) on Avenida 25 de Julio, at the height of the Maritime Port, in southern Guayaquil, according to eluniverso.com.

The incident occurred during a vehicle control operation. Images circulated of the incident show a physical altercation between the driver and the officer. Companions of the driver subsequently joined in the physical confrontation.

The ATM issued a statement on Thursday, 8 October rejecting the assaults recorded during the procedure. The National Police intervened at the scene and placed the driver at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office for corresponding investigations. To date, it has not been reported whether other people were arrested or whether the officer sustained injuries.

The municipal institution stated that operations in that sector are aimed at controlling irregular parking of heavy vehicles in the surroundings of the Maritime Port. It also announced that it would reinforce surveillance on Avenida 25 de Julio ahead of the upcoming closure of Avenida Cacique Tomalá.
