Ten active police officers detained in Guayaquil over corruption at vehicle impound yards
Twelve people were arrested in Guayaquil, ten of them active police officers, during an operation over alleged unlawful association.

Twelve people were arrested in Guayaquil in the early hours of Wednesday, 30 September, in a joint operation between the General Prosecutor's Office and the National Police, according to reporting by eldiario.ec. Ten of those detained are police officers in active service.
Interior Minister John Reimberg confirmed that the other two arrested are in inactive service, and that the group also includes civilian citizens, although the Prosecutor's Office did not specify how many.
The agents carried out 16 raids in different sectors of the city: the FAE residential area, Pradera, Los Vergeles, Alborada and multi-family police housing blocks. During the proceedings, mobile phones, documents and other items were seized.
The investigation points to alleged irregularities at vehicle impound yards administered by the National Police in Guayaquil. The authorities are investigating possible manipulation of evidence in police custody, as well as the alleged theft and sale of vehicles and auto parts held in those yards.
The 12 people are being investigated for the alleged crime of unlawful association. To date, the authorities have not disclosed their identities nor have they detailed the individual participation attributed to each person under investigation.
Reimberg released images of those detained and stated that the operation forms part of the National Police's internal housekeeping actions in response to possible acts of corruption.
The investigation continues with analysis of the evidence gathered in the 16 raids carried out in different sectors of Guayaquil.
