Ecuador's Ministry of the Interior confirmed the dismantling of the local cell of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), with more than 30 arrests following an incursion carried out in the early hours of Thursday. According to es.euronews.com, the operation involved direct participation from US troops and agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Interior Minister John Reimberg announced the results via social media platform X. The dismantled organisation operated as the operational arm of the CJNG, specialising in the export of Colombian cocaine shipments from Ecuador's south-western coast.
The operation mobilised 320 Ecuadorian agents and 50 personnel from the US Southern Command in several cities across the country. Ecuador acts as a key partner to Washington in the region and has intensified its cooperation with President Donald Trump's strategy to dismantle major drug trafficking organisations.
The operation took place amid growing warnings from NGOs about abuse of power, torture and disappearances during anti-drug raids. At the UN General Assembly, conservative president Daniel Noboa downplayed these concerns, arguing that the harshness of the strategy is criticised while the victims of drug trafficking are ignored.
