Ecuador requests extradition of Xavier Jordán, charged in Villavicencio case, within 15 days
Interior Minister John Reimberg is confident that the businessman detained in Miami will arrive in Ecuador within less than two weeks. Jordán is charged as the alleged intellectual author of the assassination of candidate Fernando Villavicencio in 2023.

Businessman Xavier Jordán, detained on Wednesday in Miami by agents of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) service, could return to Ecuador within a maximum period of 15 days, according to a statement made this Friday by Ecuadorian Interior Minister John Reimberg in an interview with the Teleamazonas channel, as reported by infobae.com.
"We have fulfilled our obligation to present all the necessary documentation where there are the Interpol notifications and the cases for which he must present himself before the courts. We believe that this will be a short process, he should very soon be on a plane to Ecuador," Reimberg stated.
The minister clarified that the 15-day timeframe is consistent with the timelines that United States authorities have managed in previous deportations of Ecuadorian citizens for migration reasons. "As we have always told him, it is just a matter of time. It catches up with everyone," he added.
Following his arrest, Jordán was transferred to Winn Correctional Centre, in Louisiana. His lawyer in Ecuador, Juan Carlos Salazar, told the EFE news agency that the businessman had requested asylum in the United States, that his stay in that country was legal and that he had scheduled an appointment to resolve that request in May of next year.
Jordán is one of seven individuals charged by Ecuador's Public Ministry as alleged intellectual authors of the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who was shot to death in August 2023 as he left a campaign rally in Quito by Colombian hitmen, eleven days before the first round of the extraordinary elections that was won by current president Daniel Noboa.
According to the Public Ministry, Jordán would have been the main instigator of the crime, in addition to having financed and planned it together with the other people involved.
Among the other defendants is the former minister under Rafael Correa (2007–2017) José Serrano, recently deported from the United States; the former assemblyman and former leader of the Latin Kings Ronny Aleaga; businessman Daniel Salcedo; and three high-ranking members of the criminal group Los Lobos, including Wilmer Chavarría, alias 'Pipo', the maximum leader of the organisation and currently detained in Spain.
Jordán also faces charges in the Metástasis case, a broad scheme of judicial, police and prison corruption linked to the deceased drug trafficker Leandro 'El Patrón' Norero. His name became publicly relevant when linked to cases of hospital corruption that came to light during the covid-19 pandemic.
