Security guard killed in southern Quito during robbery: Venezuelan man detained

A 32-year-old Venezuelan citizen was apprehended as the main suspect in the killing of Bryan Alejandro Ramírez Ángulo, a security guard of the same age, which occurred in the early morning hours of Thursday, 24 September 2026 in southern Quito, according to extra.ec.
The attack took place at approximately 05:00 at the intersection of Tanicuchi and Joaquín Gutiérrez streets, in the El Recreo sector. Ramírez had arrived minutes earlier alongside two other security custodians who were escorting a trailer loaded with door accessories, coming from Guayaquil Customs bound for a company located in Ferroviaria Baja.
The three guards arrived at the location at approximately 04:20, travelling in a JMC van. Whilst reporting by radio that they had completed the journey without incident, a yellow taxi stopped in front of their vehicle.
Four armed men descended from the taxi and took the security custodians by surprise. The attackers proceeded to rob them of their belongings and seized the weapons they were carrying in the performance of their duties: a .38 calibre revolver, a 9-millimetre calibre pistol and a .12 calibre shotgun.
During the robbery, Ramírez allegedly struggled with one of the attackers to prevent the theft. At that moment, at least two shots were fired, according to the account gathered by investigators. The perpetrators fled the scene; the guard's colleagues attempted to assist him and immediately requested medical attention, but when the paramedics arrived, Ramírez no longer showed vital signs.
A second security custodian was shot in the leg during the attack, according to reports released afterwards. Bryan Ramírez's body was found inside the guards' van; during the forensic inspection, a bullet wound was identified on the right cheekbone.
The Forensic team collected at the scene three spent 9-millimetre calibre cartridge casings, a deformed bullet, samples for laboratory analysis, fingerprints and a mobile telephone. Both the security custodians' van and the taxi used by the attackers were incorporated into the investigation.
The video surveillance cameras installed in the surrounding areas recorded the incident from various angles, and at least one of the recordings went viral on social networks, becoming a key piece of evidence for the investigators.
Preliminary investigations by the Police are treating the case as a murder linked to robbery and common crime. At the close of extra.ec's publication, there was no record yet of a hearing against the detained suspect.
