A woman was shot dead on the morning of 29 September 2026 in the Mucho Lote sector, northern Guayaquil, according to reporting by primicias.ec. The attack occurred shortly after 05:00, when the victim was leaving her home to go to work, following the lifting of the curfew in force across four provinces of the country.
According to preliminary police reports, armed men travelling on motorcycles intercepted the yellow school bus in which the woman was travelling and opened fire on her. Residents of the sector reported hearing at least seven shots.
Police and military personnel arrived at the crime scene and were waiting for the arrival of the forensic team to collect the body. Images broadcast by television channels showed the school bus parked in front of a school in the sector.
The causes of the attack remain unknown at present. Police officers announced that they would review surveillance cameras in the area to determine the escape route used by the gunmen.
The incident occurs one day after another woman was shot in the centre of Guayaquil during a robbery involving a technique known as 'sacapintas', in a week marked by several violent incidents in the city.
Between January and August 2026, Ecuador registered a reduction of 6.4% in the crime rate, driven in part by the fall in homicides in Guayaquil and Durán. However, September has concentrated multiple episodes of violence in both cities. During the first eight months of the year, the country accumulated 5,676 intentional homicides.
