Assault in downtown Guayaquil leaves woman with gunshot wound
A woman was shot in the abdomen on the morning of Monday 28 September after being robbed by two men on a motorcycle in downtown Guayaquil, according to primicias.ec. The attackers stole USD 2,000 that the victim had just withdrawn from a bank.
The attack occurred at approximately 10:00 at the intersection of 9 de Octubre and Pedro Carbo streets, a few blocks from Malecón 2000, a commercial and tourist area of the city.
"What we understand is that the woman left a bank with USD 2,000 and the money was taken by two people who got off a motorcycle," said Gustavo Játiva, head of the 9 de Octubre police district.
Transport to hospital and victim's condition
Emergency personnel transported the woman to Teodoro Maldonado hospital, where she remained stable and was undergoing preliminary tests before possible surgery, the officer reported. The victim was alone at the time of the robbery.
Following an alert to ECU 911, motorised police officers arrived at the scene and began gathering information about the incident.
Security cameras and investigation of suspects
Játiva noted that the area has several security cameras, whose footage is being reviewed by intelligence units and the Judicial Police to identify and locate the two attackers.
"One was wearing a helmet and the other was not wearing a helmet. That helps us in tracking these individuals," said the police chief.
Police have established preliminarily that the attackers may have known in advance that the woman had just withdrawn money from the bank. Játiva described the case as a crime of opportunity and recalled that the institution offers assistance to people who need to transfer large sums of money from banks. "Since the woman did not have police protection, this event occurred," he said.
Security context in the 9 de Octubre district
The police chief reported that, as of 2026, the 9 de Octubre district has seized 90 firearms and arrested 542 people. Additionally, 84 motorcycles and 31 vehicles have been recovered.
According to figures provided by Játiva, violent deaths in the district show a 23% reduction compared to the same period in 2025, equivalent to 36 fewer cases.
