Cocaine seizure at Posorja port: 37 packages found in container heading to Europe

Ecuador's police force seized 37 packages of cocaine hidden in an export container in Posorja, Guayas province, destined for Germany, according to infobae.com citing the EFE agency. The operation also resulted in the detention of the representative of the exporting company responsible for the shipment.

Interior Minister John Reimberg said the drug would be equivalent to approximately 357,050 doses and would have an estimated value of 1.67 million dollars on the European market. The packages were placed under chain of custody at the corresponding collection centre, whilst investigations into alleged drug trafficking continue.

Guayas province, and particularly the city of Guayaquil, constitutes a key point on drug trafficking routes to Europe and North America. Ecuador, bordered by Colombia and Peru—the world's two largest cocaine producers—also has several ports on its coast and operates with a dollarised economy, factors that have made it an important link in drug trafficking in recent years.

At Guayaquil's ports, more drugs are systematically seized than at other points on Ecuador's coast, reflecting the strategic weight of the area in this illegal export route.
