Police kills suspected robber in Guayaquil during assault on street vendor

A suspected criminal died on Tuesday, 22 September 2026 after being shot by a police officer on Portete and Villavicencio streets in south-central Guayaquil, according to expreso.ec.
The incident occurred around 16:00, when two individuals riding a motorcycle intercepted a baker selling his products as a street vendor in the area. The suspects approached the seller to rob him and assaulted him during the robbery.
A police officer who was eating in a nearby establishment observed what was happening and intervened. The officer ordered them to stop, but both reacted aggressively. One of them drew a firearm, according to police accounts.
Major Rubén Acuña, from the 9 de Octubre district, explained what happened: "They drew a firearm on our colleague, who used graduated force, and as a result of this, one was shot and another was wounded."
As a result of the procedure, one of the suspects died at the scene, whilst the second was wounded and was apprehended. The latter received medical attention. The motorcycle used by both individuals was retained as evidence from the police operation.
