Police pursuit ends in armed confrontation at Entrada de la 8

A police pursuit resulted in an exchange of gunfire on Monday, 19 October 2026, at 13:10, on the Perimetral highway at the height of Avenida Casuarina—known as Entrada de la 8—in Guayaquil. According to extra.ec, the confrontation left one person dead, two wounded and one officer injured.

During the operation, officers managed to free a person who was being held kidnapped and recover a stolen vehicle, according to a report from the National Police.

Camera footage captured the moment of the shooting near a bus stop

Surveillance images show a police vehicle stopped in the middle of the Perimetral highway, with a bus circulating behind and several people waiting at a public transport stop on the pavement. As gunfire erupted, bystanders fled the area whilst officers exchanged fire with the occupants of a white pickup truck, which continued advancing despite having the police vehicle blocking the road.

In the same footage, three people are observed who apparently were affected by the shooting, complaining of pain whilst waiting for assistance from authorities.

The pursuit began near Mall del Sol

On the same Monday evening, the National Police clarified that the operation began near Mall del Sol, at Avenidas Joaquín José Orrantia and Dr. Juan Tanca Marengo, and concluded in the Socio Vivienda sector.

"They opened fire against our police officers, triggering an exchange of gunfire," the institution stated in a video circulated on its social networks. The Police confirmed the toll: one person dead, two wounded and one officer injured. According to the official report, the suspects were neutralised in Socio Vivienda.

Police denied version of armoured vehicle robbery

Early videos of the incident circulated on news pages on social networks, some of which spread the hypothesis of an attempted robbery of an armoured vehicle. The National Police subsequently denied that version and clarified that the incident corresponded to a pursuit that resulted in an armed attack against its officers.

The official information specified that investigations continue with the aim of bringing those responsible for the confrontation and the kidnapping before justice.

The sector returned to normal hours later

Around 16:00 on the same Monday, extra.ec verified that activity had returned to its usual course in the sector. Just metres from the site where the gunfight took place, an ecuavóley match was being played with considerable public attendance, in marked contrast to the confrontation that had occurred hours earlier near the bus stop.
