Three crimes in less than 24 hours shake Guayaquil under state of exception

Contract killing, armed robbery and assault in less than a day in Guayaquil

Guayaquil recorded two murders and a major robbery in less than 24 hours, according to vistazo.com. The incidents occurred while the state of exception decreed by President Guillermo Lasso kept police and military patrols on the city streets.

On the morning of Tuesday, 19 October 2021, a woman of approximately 33 years was shot dead by two armed robbers at the exit of a bank in the La Alborada neighbourhood, in the north of the city. The victim had withdrawn some $6,000 in cash from the bank and received two bullet impacts when she attempted to prevent the criminals from snatching her wallet. Her husband, a member of the Police force, was present at the time of the attack.

The previous night, on Monday, 18 October, another woman was murdered in a contract killing in the Sauces VI neighbourhood, also in northern Guayaquil, near a park where children were playing. The victim was with her son at the moment she was shot. Residents of the area called ECU 911 upon hearing the gunshots, but the paramedics who attended the scene could only confirm her death.

Lieutenant Colonel Jefferson Balladares, the acting police chief of the Modelo district, confirmed the circumstances of the second crime.

In the south of the city, six armed men travelling on various motorcycles robbed a Pycca warehouse located on 25 de Julio Avenue. The criminals entered the premises as customers and then attacked the person in charge of the safe, making off with approximately $80,000. The Police travelled to the location to begin investigations.

The three incidents occurred within the framework of the state of exception that President Lasso declared with the objective of halting the advance of criminality. Under this measure, police and military patrol the streets for 24 hours a day.

National figures reflect the gravity of the situation: between January and October 2021 there were recorded almost 1,900 intentional homicides in Ecuador, equivalent to eleven per every 100,000 inhabitants. The figure exceeds the approximately 1,400 homicides recorded during the whole of 2020, according to government data.
