A Venezuelan citizen assaulted a uniformed officer with a knife on Avenida Rodríguez Bonín in Guayaquil, according to extra.ec. The incident occurred at approximately 17:00 on Tuesday 22 September, when personnel from the Florida district responded to citizen alerts about violent conduct.
Major Jairo Quinteros, chief of Operational Support for the Florida district, explained that several passersby reported the man intimidating people in the public space. Among those being threatened was a woman carrying a child in her arms.
"Upon arrival, police personnel began to speak with the citizen, but the suspect did not listen and lunged at the police officers with a short bladed weapon," Quinteros recounted.
The attacker attempted to wound one of the officers; however, the ballistic protective vest that the officer was wearing prevented him from suffering injuries. In response to the assault, one of the police officers drew his service weapon and fired to neutralise the suspect.
The individual was wounded in the hip. After receiving first aid at the scene, he was transferred to a health centre, where he underwent surgery on Wednesday and remains under police custody.
Quinteros noted that the detainee "apparently would have been under the effects of controlled substances" at the time of the incident.
