49-year-old man fatally beat acquaintance in Siimustsi flat
According to Lounaeestlane.ee, on Saturday, 10 October at 17.18, the emergency centre received a call to Siimustsi village in Jõgeva parish, where a fight had taken place in a flat. A 49-year-old intoxicated man had struck an intoxicated man and a woman known to him, and had left the scene before police arrived.
Police officers established the situation and questioned the victims to obtain initial information. The man and woman present in the flat did not allow for immediate identification of the person who had struck them, and both refused the health check offered by emergency medical services.
On Sunday, 11 October at 06.07, police received another call to the same address — this time reporting a man's body. Police officers who arrived at the scene found the body of a 42-year-old man in the flat. The body was sent for an autopsy to clarify the exact cause of death. According to preliminary assessment, the cause of death was internal injuries sustained from violence.
On the same day, the 49-year-old man who had committed the violence in the flat the previous day was arrested as a suspect in Siimustsi village.
According to Lilian Palu, investigation group leader at Tartu police department's investigation division, the victims were acquainted with the suspect and had consumed alcohol together. "At present, we are clarifying what exactly took place in the flat and what led to such serious consequences. We collected initial evidence from the crime scene and continue working to determine the motive for the act and the sequence of events that occurred," said Palu.
The prosecution requested the arrest of the suspect from Tartu district court. Priit Tõnisson, the prosecutor overseeing the case, explained that initial information points to a risk that the suspect may continue committing crimes while at liberty and attempt to evade proceedings. "To prevent this, we requested his arrest and the court initially remanded him in custody for two months," said Tõnisson.
Criminal proceedings were initiated under the provision on causing serious bodily harm. The incident is being investigated by the Southern Prefecture and supervised by the Southern Regional Prosecutor's Office.
