Shooting in Märjamaa municipality: suspect apprehended within an hour in Jüri

According to Õhtuleht, on Friday, shortly after 6 p.m., police received a call about a shooting at a farm in Märjamaa municipality. Two people were injured at the scene: a 72-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman. Despite emergency first aid, efforts to save the man's life were unsuccessful – he died at the scene. The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The suspect, a 73-year-old man, left the scene before police arrived. Heleri Vesik, a patrol police officer with the Central Estonia Police Department, explained that police immediately began determining his location. "Since the man had already opened fire on two people, this was undoubtedly a very dangerous incident, and it was important for us to apprehend him quickly," Vesik said.

Police established that the suspect was driving a car in the direction of Tallinn. Shortly after 7 p.m., patrols detained him in Jüri – approximately an hour after the initial report. A firearm was found in his possession. According to Vesik, the suspect does not have a firearms licence or a legal weapon, and the origin of the weapon used is being investigated.

The investigation is being led by the Western Circuit Prosecutor's Office, and criminal proceedings have been initiated under the paragraph concerning the killing of another person. Prosecutor Keili Tiirik noted that the prosecutor's office is requesting that the court remand the suspect in custody for an initial two months. "The use of a firearm against another person is an extremely serious incident, and therefore the circumstances of what occurred must be thoroughly investigated," Tiirik said.

According to police, the shooter and the victims knew each other. The precise circumstances of the incident and its legal assessment will become clear during the investigation.
