Two pensioners in Ida-Virumaa fall victim to telephone scams
In recent months, at least two major telephone scams have been perpetrated in Ida-Virumaa, with elderly men falling victim. In both cases, unknown individuals convinced the victims to hand over money or bank cards under the guise of holding trusted official positions. In total, the men lost nearly €45,000.
In the first case, a 75-year-old man received a call from someone claiming to be a bank employee and subsequently an investigator. The caller convinced the man that he should hand over his bank card to a courier. The victim agreed. Later, it emerged that €22,000 had been withdrawn from his account.
The second fraud began at the end of April, when an 89-year-old man received a call allegedly from a hospital. The caller asked the man to send his test samples and passport details. Soon after, the same man was contacted by someone who introduced himself as a police officer. He asked the man to hand over €20,000 to a courier. A few months later, the man was asked to withdraw cash and hand it over to another courier. The second victim's total loss is €22,600.
Police warn that banks, hospitals and police do not request bank cards or cash transfers over the telephone. If anyone makes such demands, one should immediately contact the police.
In addition to the scams, on the evening of 9 July it was reported that an unidentified man with a knife-like object chased after children in Narva. Police immediately launched a search, but the suspect was not found. The circumstances are being investigated further in criminal proceedings.
On the same evening, police officers in Narva detained a 41-year-old man who had physically assaulted his partner.
