On Monday morning, 6 January, at around 10.30 a.m., police received a report of a van theft from Valga town centre. A postal worker had left the vehicle to deliver post when a stranger got into the unattended vehicle's driving seat and drove off.

According to the South Prefecture, patrols located the stolen Omniva Peugeot Partner quickly on the Võru-Mõniste-Valga road. When police officers gave a flashing light signal ordering the vehicle to stop, the driver did not comply. A stinger was deployed on the road to stop the vehicle, which punctured the van's tyres and brought the car to a halt.

Behind the wheel was found a 59-year-old drunk man, who was taken into custody as a suspect. Why he specifically targeted the post van will be clarified during further investigation.
