The Central Criminal Police are investigating an incident in which four criminal police officers from the Western Prefecture apprehended a man from whom a significant quantity of prohibited substances were found. The officers are now suspected of potentially using methods without the necessary court warrant while investigating suspicion of crime.
The events began with a tip that a man was moving with a large quantity of narcotics. Based on this information, police officers began to monitor him. It is now being clarified whether this constituted covert surveillance — such an action would have required prior authorisation.
State Prosecutor Käroli Tiirik noted that both the police and the prosecution must detect and prevent crimes, but all steps must be within the scope of the law. "Every action must be correct both substantively and formally," he said.
Western Prefecture Chief Argo Tali stated that the police themselves noticed the possible violation. He added that although the tip proved accurate and resulted in the discovery of a large quantity of narcotics, the correctness of the procedure cannot be disregarded. Since there was no authorisation for the surveillance operation, criminal proceedings were initiated to clarify exactly what happened.
