A hearing began on Tuesday morning in Harju District Court in a criminal case in which a man is accused of entering a flat in Mustamäe, Tallinn, last December and stabbing his ex-wife there.
According to Delfi, the tragic events began on 11 December at a residence on Vilde Street. Police officers who arrived at the scene witnessed the man striking his ex-partner's chest with a kitchen knife. One officer asked the seriously injured woman to stay conscious and not to fall asleep.
A representative of the Northern Prosecutor's Office, Lauri Jõgi, argued in court that it was a clear attempted murder. The defence, however, presented a different perspective. Defence lawyer Karine Nersesjan, who represents the accused Vjatšeslav Zubow, emphasised that the man acted out of love.
The defence counsel noted at the hearing that all these sad events occurred solely because her client is a man who loved his wife and loves her even now. This position stood out in that the prosecutor treated the case as a criminal matter.
Estonia has drawn wide attention to the problem of intimate partner violence. The case under discussion is one example of the ultimate breakdown of a long-term relationship that led to an act of violence. The court proceedings continue.
