According to Google News EE — Crime, Tartu police stopped a motorist on early Friday, 4 September, on Võru Street who ignored a stop signal and decided to accelerate.
Police officers first noticed that the driver was not using directional indicators when manoeuvring. When a stop signal was given on Lootuse Street, the driver did not stop — instead he accelerated and drove through Kesk Street and Õnne Street onto Raua Street, where his vehicle speed was measured at 105 km/h.
The getaway ended at the intersection of Raua and Tehase Streets, where the vehicle went off the road and crashed into a fence post. The driver exited the car through the passenger door and ran away towards the rear of a building. Police officers ran after him and arrested him.
The man displayed signs indicative of drug intoxication. Precise intoxication will be established through expert examination. A background check showed that he did not have a driving licence — and even more: it was the fifth time this year that police had caught him driving without permission.
The prosecutor requested the man's arrest, arguing that the number of repeated violations left no doubt that if released the man would continue to behave dangerously. The court granted the request and the man was taken to Tartu prison, where he must spend at least two months initially.
Police urge everyone to report drivers with suspicious driving styles or suspected of intoxication by calling 112.
