Brawl ends in death in Jõgeva parish – suspect in custody
According to Delfi.ee, police detained a 49-year-old man on Tuesday in Jõgeva parish, suspected of causing the death of a 42-year-old man.
The incident began on Saturday at 17:18, when the emergency centre received a call to Siimusti district: a brawl had occurred in a flat where an intoxicated 49-year-old man had struck an inebriated man and a mutual acquaintance, a woman. The suspect left the scene before police arrived. Officers documented the situation and questioned the victims, but the man and woman present in the flat were unable to identify the assailant immediately. Both refused medical assessment by paramedics.
The following morning, on Sunday at 6:07, a new call came in to the same address – this time reporting a man's body. Police officers who attended found the 42-year-old man dead. The woman present in the flat was questioned as a victim. The body was sent for autopsy to establish the precise cause of death; according to preliminary assessment, the cause of death was internal injuries sustained from violence.
Tartu police district investigation group leader Lilian Palu said the victims knew the suspect and consumed alcohol together. "We are currently investigating what exactly happened in the flat and what led to such serious consequences. We collected initial evidence from the crime scene and we are continuing work to establish the motive for the act and the sequence of events that took place," said Palu.
The prosecutor's office requested the Tartu county court to detain the suspect. The prosecutor leading the proceedings, Priit Tõnisson, explained: "Initial information suggests that the person suspected in the crime may continue committing crimes if released and may attempt to evade proceedings. To prevent this, we requested his detention and the court has placed him in custody for two months initially."
Criminal proceedings were initiated under the article on causing serious bodily harm. The incident is being investigated by the Southern Prefecture and is directed by the Southern Circuit Prosecutor's Office.
