Tallinn man arrested following mass car vandalism in Haaberstis

Police detained a 40-year-old man in Tallinn in the early hours of Thursday following an incident in which he is suspected of intentionally damaging more than 20 motor vehicles. The court granted the prosecution's detention request, and the man must remain in custody for at least two months during the preliminary investigation.

According to Lounaeestlane.ee, police received notification in early October that 21 vehicles had been damaged over the course of a single night in Haaberstis. Cars parked on the same street had been scratched and their door handles wrenched.

Hisko Vares, head of the investigations department at the West-Harju police district, explained that police officers immediately began investigating the circumstances — speaking with car owners and witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage from the area. "The evidence gathered at the scene provided grounds to suspect the 40-year-old man. Police officers worked over several days to locate him and detained him at his home in the early hours of Thursday," said Vares.

Leading prosecutor Anastasia Senetskaja emphasised that the man had previously been convicted of crimes and that this was not a random violation. "According to the suspicion, the man damaged cars having been recently released from prison and whilst serving a probationary period. Since the sentence imposed by the court had not deterred him from conducting himself lawfully, and remaining at liberty he could continue committing crimes, in our assessment there was no alternative but to request the man's detention," said the prosecutor.

According to the current assessment, the total damage amounts to approximately 25,000 euros. Criminal proceedings have been initiated on the basis of the article concerning damage and destruction of property.
